The business of controversy

Commentary
Last week, Reddit, the infamous social news aggregation website raised $50 million from celebrities Snoop Dogg and Jared Leto, as well as A-list investors such as, Sam Altman, Marc Andreessen, Alfred Lin and Peter Thiel. The nine-year-old company, which proudly calls itself, “the front page of the Internet,” attracts more than 130 million users every month and has become an internet sensation with its viral videos, uncensored clips of TV shows, and “Ask Me Anything” threads where celebrities and ordinary folks alike can invite the community to ask them any question. Recently, the website received a lot of flak when its users published stolen naked photos of high profile celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton via a forum called The Fappening. Reddit immediately banned the forum. What’s intriguing about Reddit is, despite being hounded by controversies, the company is not in any way slowing down and is now valued at more than half a billion dollars.
