The rise of restaurant booking services

In a move to attract more users and monetise its services, TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel review website, has been consuming restaurant booking startups since 2014. Last May, the company acquired LaFourchette, one of the leading Internet and mobile restaurant reservation systems in France with over 12,000 participating restaurants. Recently, two popular Italian online restaurant booking sites, Restopolis and Mytable.it, were acquired as well. The resulting website is called TheFork, which merges the networks of Restopolis and Mytable.it into one platform. With the acquisitions, TripAdvisor will be looking to strengthen its position in Europe’s restaurant market. It has LaFourchette in France, Belgium and Switzerland, Eltendor in Spain, and TheFork in Italy as well as other European countries. TripAdvisor now competes with Priceline that recently acquired OpenTable, North America’s leading restaurant reservation service with over 24,000 restaurants in its network. All these acquisitions suggest that there’s tremendous growth potential in the online table reservation category and there could be increased M&A activity in the sector this year.
