This week, Google announced its acquisition of Moodstocks, a Paris-based, machine learning technology company. This deal comes just a few weeks after Twitter acquired Magic Pony, a London-based machine learning technology startup that can automatically sharpen low-resolution images and videos. Moodstocks specialises in image recognition technology that turns smartphone cameras into smart sensors, which can see and make sense of its surroundings. Although the acquisition will phase-out Moodstock’s image recognition API for smartphones, the company’s engineers will continue to develop machine vision tools as part of Google’s services. According to experts, the acquisition will help pave the way for Google to make images as searchable as text.
