Immigration Reform and the Tech Industry
In the past, outsourcing was a dirty word, bringing up images of hiring cheaper workers in India, China, the Philippines, and so on, to do the job of their American and other first-world counterparts. Today hiring overseas, especially for technology startups is not a way to reduce costs but to compete for top talents. In fact, companies pay more just to get the best minds in the world including those from Asia and Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and South America. A growing number of small, private US tech companies now have engineering offices overseas.
LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman wrote in a recent op-ed in The Washington Post that “immigration has benefited the United States immensely.” He cited that multiple studies confirm that immigrants are more likely to start businesses than native-born Americans. Mark Zuckerberg agreed with Hoffman when he said immigrants are key to a knowledge economy. Discussions and debates on US immigration reform have a long way to go but the fact is irrefutable: no matter what continent you live in, as long as you have the talent, you will get to work with the biggest tech companies in the world.
