Is coding the new literacy?

From Silicon Valley to Washington DC, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and even U.S. President Barrack Obama have been telling everyone to learn how to code. Coding is now considered as the “new literacy” and experts believe that it should be taught in schools and even to those with non-tech backgrounds. So what is the big deal with coding? Coding is the art of telling a computer how to perform complex tasks. It is the language of the future. Since software touches almost all areas of our daily lives, coding will help us not just understand how software works but create and modify programs and websites. The benefits of teaching children and adults how to code extend beyond personal and professional enrichment. In the U.S., it means that they will be able fill more jobs in computer science related fields instead of outsourcing jobs to India, China and other countries. As our lives are being shaped by computer programs, learning how to code today has become a matter of future survival. We simply need to evolve, stay learned and competitive in the fast-growing digital economy.

Students and teachers who are interested in coding for computer programming have many learning tools at their disposal, one of which is Code School, a website that teaches web technologies from your browser. Code School was recently acquired by Pluralsight for $36 million. You can read about the funding here.
