Spotify acquired CrowdAlbum

Commentary

In an effort to attract more artists and music fans, Spotify has acquired CrowdAlbum. CrowdAlbum was launched in 2013. The company aggregates photos and videos from artists’ performances based on the location and time when these were shared on social media. The albums essentially give artists a visual history of their concerts and help them connect with their fans. Although it’s still not clear if Spotify will shut down CrowdAlbum, which is what it did to its two most recent acquisitions, the company says CrowdAlbum will help them continue to build products and tools for musicians to engage with fans and gain insights about their preferences and behaviours.

Kamcord raises $10 million

Commentary
Kamcord, the popular mobile game streaming service, has launched appcasting, a new feature that lets Android users stream a live view of their mobile phone’s screen. According to Kamcord founder, Aditya Ratham, appcasting is the next step in mobile media capture. Unlike YouTube or Snapchat, which requires users to shoot videos, Kamcord’s appcasting utilises the mobile phone’s own screen as the camera, allowing virtually anyone to live stream anything that appears on the screens of their mobile phones. Broadcasters can show websites, apps or videos in real time and create a different kind of content. Along with the launch of appcasting, Kamcord announced a $10 million Series C funding led by Time Warner.

Medium, the social publishing platform founded by Twitter co-founder Ev Williams, has raised $50 million in Series C funding in a round that values the company at $600 million. The round was led by Spark Capital, with participation from Ev Williams, Andreessen Horowitz and GV. The funding follows an earlier financing round of $57 million in September 2015, which valued the company at $400 million. Medium is a free platform for people to publish their own ideas and stories. Medium is focused on being the best place where people can read and write interesting content. It’s a publishing tool, a social network and an ecosystem with the sole focus of sharing the written word.
