Adobe Systems, the maker of Photoshop and Illustrator design software, has acquired Aviary, a developer of mobile SDKs (Software Development Kits) used to create mobile apps. It’s common knowledge that Aviary has competed with Adobe in past by creating Phoenix, their image editor similar in functionality to Photoshop, and Raven, Aviary’s vector-based image editor that works like Adobe Illustrator. Although Raven is not a feature for feature copycat of Adobe’s Illustrator, it remains a very similar product.
The acquisition will boost Adobe’s Creative Cloud offering. It will also enhance Adobe’s up-and-coming software library called Creative SDK which will allow app developers to use Adobe’s software offerings and application programming interfaces or APIs previously only available for internal company use.
