A healthcare revolution?

Google Glass may not be surefire hit among consumers but it’s gaining momentum in healthcare. The gadget now plays a growing role in hospitals as developers find new ways to incorporate its use in the practice of medicine. One of the companies at the forefront of developing Google Glass is, a Texas-based startup that develops apps that allow Google Glass to access patient data from the EMR (Electronic Medical Record) instantly, enable consultations with specialists on demand, stream live videos like demo surgeries to other doctors thousands of miles away and monitor patient telemetry remotely. What’s more, is HIPAA compliant to ensure that a patient’s medical data remains safe from hackers. Today, the company has raised $5.4 million in funding to hire more engineers, marketing and sales personnel.  Read about the funding here.

A special time for education

Have you ever imagined what education will be like in the future? Ten years ago, the iPhone, Android phones and tablets did not even exist; but today these devices have moved into classrooms worldwide and have triggered the start of a tech revolution in learning. Content based online education has been around for a while, but the recent innovations in mobile content-delivery, functionality and interactivity, are now allowing students and teachers to share ideas and conversations anywhere/anytime, taking learning well-beyond the confines of a classroom. Investors are clambering to try to get a piece of the fast-evolving ed-tech market. This week, Udacity, MasteryConnect and Jike Xueyuan, a Chinese IT education startup, all received funding. In addition, Blackboard, the Washington DC-based ed-tech behemoth acquired UK-based Requestec, a provider of custom-made SMS and MMS applications. With more and more investment pouring in into the multi billion-dollar ed-tech industry, analysts expect to see continued innovation and some sizeable exits. In the words of Bill Gates, who’s a firm believer in the future of ed-tech, this is indeed “a special time in education.”

Time to give a hoot?

Hootsuite is on a roll. With more that 10 million users that includes 744 of the Fortune 1000 companies, Hootsuite is now the leading social media relationship platform in the world. Today, the company announced that it has received yet another round of funding. Earlier this month, the company already raised $35 million Series C from Fidelity Investments and today; it raised an additional $60 million Series D from a consortium of investors. The investments bring Hoosuite’s current funding to a total of $250 million. Another thing to hoot about is the company also snapped up Zeetl, a social telephony and messaging platform that allows its users to call and message their Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn friends for free without needing to know phone numbers. The acquisition will allow Hootsuite to include voice technology into its popular social media platform.
